I read 32 books in 2011 (see them all – with reviews – here). Here are my favorite five (these weren’t necessarily published in 2011… that’s just when I happened to read them): Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters, by Tim Keller (Dutton, 2009). The… [Read more…]
I thought that I’d take five minutes and walk you through a few new features on the blog, plus review some top posts from the last few months. First, I’ve added a “sermons” page, where I can add audio from messages at churches here in Greece or back in the States. Right now there are… [Read more…]
I love a good book. I get all geeky over a good read. In fact, I rate (and often review) the books I read online: Goodreads and LibraryThing. Yeah, two different sites – I love to get my nerd on. If you use either site, let’s connect. I’d love to see what you’re reading, and… [Read more…]
Well, it’s late September and starting to feel like Fall (I realize that it has felt like Autumn in some places for several weeks… but here in Athens, Fall is just beginning to show up). It seems like a great time to review some of the happenings of the summer months. Whether you’re new to… [Read more…]
I thought that I’d take a minute and share a few of my favorite books from this summer (not that these books were released this summer, just that I was able to read them this summer). Here’s my top three: Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that… [Read more…]
Happy Friday! More photos from our time in Switzerland! We’re still buzzing about the beauty there. Enjoy! Check out more about Jeff’s work here – http://www.schumancentre.eu/
We’re back in Athens after a week in Beatenberg – a mountain village in central Switzerland. Wow, talk about beautiful! I didn’t know that these kinds of places really existed outside of the movies! Breath-taking. So, what was the occasion? We gathered together with roughly 100 other International Teams workers from throughout Europe (plus a… [Read more…]
It’s back… The International Association for Refugees (IAFR) has posted the 2011 World Map of the Refugee Highway. It’s a great visual of where refugees come from, where they’re going, and some of the stops along the way. You can see that Athens is a major path for those coming into Europe from Afghanistan, Iran,… [Read more…]
Our sending agency, International Teams, has been working on a new project to help raise awareness and funds for their missionaries around the world: Songs for the Oppressed. Songs for the Oppressed is a musical experience from independent artists and worship leaders working collaboratively to fuel a movement that creates awareness, solidarity and change for… [Read more…]
Sofia is three. Hard to believe. She’s very smart and very verbal (although sometimes a bit shy). Here’s a not-so-shy moment with mom, Emma (15 months!), and the video camera. Enjoy!
It’s time to take a short break from the world of blogging. I plan on going off the grid for August – need to give extra energy to a few other projects… plus it’s just nice to have a break. The blog will be back in September! Until then, you can still connect with us… [Read more…]
Happy Friday! Hope that you have a great one. It’s hard to believe that August is almost upon us. We’re looking forward to it… but can’t believe how quickly life is moving. I feel old just saying it, but where have the days gone?!?! Swimming with some of the refugee kiddies; they love getting out… [Read more…]
The construction work at our ministry center (the Athens Refugee Center, or ARC) is making progress! Right now, our hope is that we can clean and organize the ARC over the week of August 9th, and be ready to welcome refugees again by the week of August 16th. There is still a lot of work… [Read more…]
What does Athens have to do with Dublin? Well, Greece is the primary entry point for “irregular migrants” (refugees and illegal immigrants); the Dublin II Regulation is the common European asylum law. The European asylum system is a mess. Period. From my perspective (I’m not a politician, but on-the-ground working with refugees in Greece), the… [Read more…]
Happy Friday! It’s been a hot week here in Athens… but we’re alive and well! Here are some photos from our week. Enjoy! Sofia and Eric at the chalkboard The new Cami: Welcome Ana! Emma looking expressive Carousel Time!
