I love Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I have the luxury of being forgetful… and without a regular reminder, I would easily forget just how profound was the life of Dr. King. No, he was not perfect; but his life and message are challenging and his courage is inspiring. Below is a re-port from 2009,… [Read more…]
Here’s a great little video from Tom Wright on how to read scripture. Great insights! It’s very much worth your time. …which reminds me, I’m working towards reading through the entire Bible this year. Anyone care to join me? It’s not too late to start! Find a reading plan here (and let me know, I’d love… [Read more…]
I read 32 books in 2011 (see them all – with reviews – here). Here are my favorite five (these weren’t necessarily published in 2011… that’s just when I happened to read them): Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters, by Tim Keller (Dutton, 2009). The… [Read more…]
I’m just digging into Tullian Tchividjian‘s latest book, Jesus + Nothing = Everything. Coming out of a dark and difficult season of ministry, Tchividjian experienced anew the power and freedom of the gospel. I loved this quote, and need reminded of it daily! Rediscovering the gospel enabled me to see that: because Jesus was strong… [Read more…]
As I shared last week, a book full of stories and testimonies from the ministry here was recently published. You can order the book directly Amazon here. If you need reminded that God is still in the business of changing lives, this is an encouraging read. I’ve nearly finished reading through my copy. It’s been… [Read more…]
A project long in the making has finally come to be: Kingdom Beyond Borders: Finding Hope Along the Refugee Highway. Kingdom Beyond Borders is a collection of refugee stories and testimonies from 15 years of ministry at Helping Hands! What more could you ask for! While most of these stories pre-date our family’s arrival in… [Read more…]
I love a good book. I get all geeky over a good read. In fact, I rate (and often review) the books I read online: Goodreads and LibraryThing. Yeah, two different sites – I love to get my nerd on. If you use either site, let’s connect. I’d love to see what you’re reading, and… [Read more…]
One more book recommendation. How do we live out the teachings of Luke 10:25-37 in a ever-connected world? Who Is My Neighbor: Being a Good Samaritan in a Connected World, by Steve Moore (NavPress, 2011). In the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10), Jesus calls us to be a neighbor by showing compassion to… [Read more…]
I thought that I’d take a minute and share a few of my favorite books from this summer (not that these books were released this summer, just that I was able to read them this summer). Here’s my top three: Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that… [Read more…]
I’m reading through David Platt’s Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream. There’s some really good, really challenging stuff here. Following Jesus is certainly not for the faint of heart. As we’re in the midst of graduation season (high school and university), the passage below seems incredibly relevant. Graduates: No more good boys… [Read more…]
I bought Tim Keller’s latest book The King’s Cross: The Story of the World in the Life of Jesus about two weeks ago. I’m half way through and loving it! Keller examines Mark’s portrait of Jesus with passion and insight. Although it works through Mark’s gospel, it isn’t a commentary. Rather, The King’s Cross highlights… [Read more…]
“In a sermon Dick Lucas once preached, he recounted an imaginary conversation between an early Christian and her neighbor in Rome. “Ah,” the neighbor says. “I hear you are religious! Great! Religion is a good thing. Where is your temple or holy place?” “We don’t have a temple,” replies the Christian. “Jesus is our temple.”… [Read more…]
I love to read. Here are a few of my favorite books that I’ve read this fall/winter. Enjoy and happy reading! Surprised by Grace: God’s Relentless Pursuit of Rebels (Tullian Tchividjian; Crossway 2010). Pastor Tullian moves artfully through the book of Jonah, pointing out gospel landmarks and Jesus-sightings along the way. Surprised by Grace is… [Read more…]
I spent a weekend in Elmira, Ontario (Canada) earlier this month. About an hour outside of Toronto, Elmira is home to the offices of International Teams – Canada. [A very quick explanation for the uninitiated: International Teams sends out 1200 missionaries to over 200 teams around the world (in 66 countries, to be exact). The… [Read more…]
My mom gets into town next week. She’s bringing a book that I’m looking forward to reading, Making Ideas Happen. It’s all about taking a thought from the idea stage to the practice stage. It’s all about, well… making ideas happen! I’ve heard good things and am looking forward to diving in. On the general… [Read more…]
